About Diane Sommer

Tell us what makes you passionate about being a healthcare provider. Motivation for pursuing a career in medicine is rooted in a genuine desire to help others. I believe that listening attentively is one of the most valuable ways we can support individuals. While healthcare may not have the cure for every disease, it plays a crucial role in managing conditions and enhancing patients' quality of life. In your opinion, what should be the role of a primary care provider for a patient, taking into account both physical health and behavioral health needs? The role of the primary care provider is to support and manage chronic illnesses, encompassing both physical and mental health. They coordinate referrals to specialists when necessary, ensuring comprehensive care. Primary care physicians are responsible for ordering baseline tests and either initiating treatment or providing definitive care. Patients should not have to wait for specialist consultations to receive a diagnosis or begin care. Primary care providers approach each patient holistically, considering the whole person rather than focusing on a single organ system. This includes addressing social, family, behavioral, and physical factors that influence overall health and well-being. Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you like to do in your spare time? I graduated Medical School in 1987. For the past 22 years, I have worked in the prison system. This was a rewarding experience since this is an underserved population. It was fulfilling to help someone improve their health and improve their life. I have two children, two cats and two dogs. I have only one baby, which is my seven-month-old golden retriever puppy who keeps me on my toes. I enjoy playing with my grandnephew and soon to be born my grandniece. I am a member of local community theater group. I enjoy crafting, especially knitting.
